Biotechnology has very recently contributed to the emergence of major innovations in cosmetics both in terms of bio-active properties and in their evaluation.

Despite a challenging international regulatory context (IECIC list, Nagoya), algae innovation remains a major driver for the economic players in cosmetics. As industrial actors in innovation, you are maybe interested in exploiting / wild harvesting of new species of algae, or even the possibilities to produce them by using a wide range of cultivation methods (in ponds, photobioreactors, …), able to promote the production of metabolites of interest, or simply would like to upgrade your perspectives in sustainability.

The world market is indeed looking for natural, healthy and quality products, combining efficiency and traceability.

Among the 100 key players in biotech innovation in cosmetics in Brittany, France’s leading region for marine biotechnology, the CEVA has the specificity to be the only technological innovation center working on algae and marine plants.

For instance, CEVA took part in the development of proprietary cosmetic active ingredients (oligo-alginates) from Laminaria. A proprietary enzyme has been produced, and a biotechnological process for the production of the bio-actives has been developed. The enzyme and process have been patented with IFREMER, and an exclusive agreement has been signed with a major player in marine cosmetics for the marketing of a range of active ingredients.

We are able to provide you with technical support in order to secure your sourcing or boost your innovations, for example by hosting and maintaining your microalgae or macroalgae strain collection in our premises or by identifying new species or molecules of interest for a targeted biological activity from local or tropical species. The CEVA also valorises enzymes which have been identified within diverse research programs in order to produce new active oligosaccharides for cosmetic and nutrition applications.
